While writing my thesis I was also awarded my first fellowship via the American Political Science Association's Minority Fellowship Program. I also got the wonderful opportunity to present my thesis proposal at the Emerging Scholars Conference at the University of Michigan, which helped introduce me to more amazing scholars in my cohort and faculty across the discipline. As a first generation student who grew up poor and often was told by teachers that I was a disappointment (or that I had potential but didn't apply myself), my experiences at ARC with such kind and passionate faculty were incredibly healing and life-affirming. It was there that I learned not only that it was possible for me to love school, but that I might want to give back and teach or research myself one day. Now, I have the opportunity to do so, and I can definitely say that despite the turmoil I went through to get here, I wouldn't be at this point without ARC and I'm forever grateful for that experience. At the very least, I'd have a lot more debt and probably be more cynical about the prospect of higher education otherwise.

So, is it illegal to wear the American flag as a cape? First we must look at the flag code and the ways it is misunderstood. The wearing of the flag is listed as unacceptable according to U.S. flag code section 176 (d) which states, "The flag should never be used as wearing apparel, bedding, or drapery." While many people think the flag code states that you can't wear any type of flag apparel, including a cape, the truth is that you can wear flag clothing as long as it's not made from an actual, real American flag. So can you wear a flag tee shirt? Yes. Can you wear a cape made with the stars and stripes as the pattern? Yes. Can you drape an actual flag over your shoulders and wear it as a cape? The answer to that one is no because of the flag code stipulating real flags are not meant for such purposes.

Despite that language, the American flag is depicted in many other ways for a number of purposes, many commercial. Still, the American Legion, which played a key role in drafting the Flag Code and is the go-to authority on proper U.S. flag etiquette, has not taken an official position yet on the black-and-white version with a blue line, a spokesman told The Marshall Project.
